המסע האישי של חנין: מול ועם החומה

אורנה בן שטרית מצלמת וכותבת על האמנים אשר משתתפים בפרויקט "מזרחיות וערביות באמנות חזותית בישראל". מדי שבוע נפרסם במארב אמן שמשתתף בפרויקט.

חנין קנדלפת, אדריכלית. נולדה בנצרת ב-1979 .התחנכה בבית הספר של הכנסייה הבפטיסטית בנצרת. למדה אדריכלות בטכניון. השתתפה בפרויקט חילופי סטודנטים באיטליה, שם כשחלקה את ספסל הלימודים יחד עם ישראלים יהודים גם התמודדה בפעם הראשונה עם זהותה הישראלית כשווה בין שווים. כיום, חיה ועובדת  בירושלים.
עבודותיה במהלך הלימודים נגעו במידה מסוימת בנושאים פוליטיים. בפרויקט הגמר בטכניון עסקה בכביש 6 החוצה את טייבה, ניסתה להתעלם מקווי אורך ורוחב ממשיים ויצרה מעין עיר פוסט-מודרנית ערבית ראשונה.

העבודה המוצגת בפרויקט הנוכחי מורכבת מתצלומים בשחור לבן של הגדר המקיפה את אבו דיס וכן מטקסט המוצג כתזה מלומדת ומתאר את המסע האישי של חנין מול ועם החומה.

Serpentine Horizon

My work of photography came as a result of my reaction to this huge object bluntly standing in the new surroundings, that I moved to live in, and invading my horizon. I had to discover how it constructed my spatial and how its proportions conquered my space. I rapidly recognized it was much more than a question of space.
I started in a discovery trip in the area of Abu Dis. In the hills of Abu Dis the Wall rises in disproportionate, yet very static, scale outlining the horizon. My eyes caught the would-be frames that could show how horrific the Wall is. Next I wandered the streets of Abu Dis where my mind could peel the paradox that lies behind the facts: Life is absorbed into the obstructive Wall.  
My journey between Jerusalem and Abu Dis had been interrupted by the need to take some demanding shots of the camera deciphering a dialogue between the expansive city and the Wall, a dialogue of concrete. For us architects, concrete is the most basic material and is always used to create solid houses and secure lives. It was very interesting and totally unexpected to observe that this new horizon of concrete came to give someone even more “security” yet it interfered in secure lives and future.
The traditional horizon in which the only vertical objects were olive trees was replaced by the new serpentine horizon created by the vertical Wall. Cranes, objects spread in the new 21st century skyline and at first sight symbolizing development and prosperity, came to be, in a closer look, a total contradiction.     
The minute this image, the image of a vertical concrete “fence”, took part of our land it created a new perception in everybody’s mind…a new reality. It started to develop a new perception of the Open Space; an Open Space enclosed by an 8–meter-high Wall! A new generation, whose eyes will face a Wall when looking at the Open Space, will not be able to make his dreams take off beyond the cruel realities of life.
My trips took me next to the northern city of Qalqylia where yet a new perception could be shot. The new reality was rooted in every day life. The will to continue living, to plant seeds for the future, continued in the shadow of the Wall.
I will continue, looking, searching and shooting pictures knowing it is much more than a question of space.
